Most of us can remember back to elementary school science when we learned about the role of our digestive tract. We learned how it helps us digest our food so we can utilize those nutrients for energy. However, that’s hardly scratching the surface on how powerful and complex the gastrointestinal system is and why gut health is central to overall health.
“ALL DISEASE BEGINS IN THE GUT.” -HIPPOCRATES
This is especially true when it comes to the potential of our gut microbiome, also known as the gut flora. It is estimated that there are tens of trillions of different microorganisms in the gut, creating a unique blend of microorganisms in each and every individual. Research suggests that many health issues begin as imbalances in the digestive system. In order to help improve health, we have to get to the root of the problem, which often leads us back to resolving imbalances or issues in the digestive tract or gut microbiome. New research is also starting to show a strong connection between the gut and the brain, as well as the ability of the gut bacteria to influence neurotransmitter levels and inflammation in the body. Our diet can also trigger changes in the gut microbiome, for better or for worse. It’s important to determine which foods are best for your body’s digestive system, so you can be sure you’re not doing more harm than good. This means not only looking into food allergies and food sensitivities but also foods that generally create more inflammation in the body. Our goal is to help you get the most out of what you’re consuming, to best fuel and nourish your body.
Here’s how we evaluate gut health:
